As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to impact the international community and the entire human family, this crisis has altered our way of life, called into question our economic, health and social systems, and ultimately exposed our human fragility. In such times, the uncertainties, inequalities, and divisions, both among and within States, have become more and more visible, to the detriment of the most vulnerable. At the same time, the crisis has revived the awareness that we are one human family. Indeed, an answer to the most pressing global challenges should involve all the members of the family of nations. As Pope Francis has often noted, we will be able to overcome the current crisis only if we work together as one human family. In this challenging context, extreme individualism and the “globalization of indifference” cannot be an acceptable response for the international community. In his most recent Encyclical Letter, Fratelli tutti, released on 3 October 2020 in Assisi, Pope Francis reflected on the ideals of human fraternity and social friendship and strongly reaffirmed the way of dialogue and cooperation, over divisions and competition, as the sole path to integral development and peace. Inspired by the words of the Holy Father, and to reinforce the urgent need for cooperation and a revitalized multilateralism centered on the human person, the Permanent Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva organized together with the Pontifical Lateran University a High-Level Event on Fraternity, Multilateralism and Peace. The event featured presentations by His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of His Holiness Pope Francis, His Eminence Cardinal Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, MCCJ, President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and various highlevel dignitaries of the United Nations specialized agencies and other international organizations.
